'Getting directory contents' timeout (only on ftp folders with thousands of files)

lftp expects another reply, this one:
<--- 226 Directory send OK.
and never receives it. Most probably it is a server problem.

---> LIST
<--- 150 Here comes the directory listing.
---- Got EOF on data connection
---- Closing data socket
hlp: Getting directory contents (106105) [Waiting for response...]
**** Timeout - reconnecting
